April 25, 2013: Day 32

Its been a month now since the outbreak. Boy what a difference in the world. I made another food run to the supermarket a couple days ago to stock back up. I only had a few minutes before attracting unwanted attention, but I made it out without incident. On the way back, though, I saw a pickup truck driving a few blocks away. I ducked inbetween some houses, hoping they didn't see me. There are two people in the truck at least, one driving obviously and there was one in the truck bed. I could tell the person in the back had an assault rifle, but thats about it. I have not gone out since then. Hopefully I stay safe and trouble free.

April 18, 2013: Day 25

I heard more shots today. I think they were from an assault rifle too. Some one out there has a major advantage. The troubling part is that I don't know if they are friendly or not and how many there are. I could have sworn I heard some sort of vehicle driving around as well. Maybe its the same person or people. It probably is. I have just been laying low the past few days. I have not even gone out to get rid of the few zombies around the outside of the house. The last thing I want is someone to notice the dead zombies and figure out that there is a survivor in the area. Its a very different world out there now. Not everyone can be trusted. They may want what I have and with no cops to stop them, they will take. I can't see what I would have that others would want, though. I have enough food for another week and just rudimentary weapons. With no laws or threat of punishment, you really find out what people are like.

April 12, 2013: Day 19

Well, I decided on a name for my new friend. I calling him Captain or Cap after Captain America. I was always a big comic book fan and this dog must have been pretty tough to survive out there, just like Captain America. Other than that, we have just been sitting tight in our new home. I have been trying to keep a low profile so that I don't attract too many zombies. I have started to sneak out and take out the closet zombie or two. Mainly just to get used to killing them as sick as that sounds. I'm starting to realize that I'm going to have to do many things I would not even think of doing before the world went to shit. But I going to have to do what I have to in order to survive. I could have sworn I heard gunshots earlier today. That could mean survivors, but not all survivors are going to be friendly. I'm going to have to be careful. Still, the idea of others out is means there still could be hope.

April 9, 2013: Day 16

A lot has happened the past few days. First of all, on the 6th, I made a run to the supermarket. I managed to dodge zombies on the way there to arrive safely. The supermarket was fairly free of zombies. There were about three in the store. This not a huge supermarket, though. I ran in and filled my backpack with various canned goods. I figured those would keep the longest. It seemed like I only spent a matter of minutes in the store, but by the time I went back up to the front exit, the parking lot was filling up. I attracted too much attention. There was probably about 50 zombies out front. I headed towards the back to try to exit through the warehouse, but two zombies blocked that path too. I had to improvise. I shove a cart through one of the front windows and shattered it. I pick the one with the clearest path and ran through. As soon as I made it out, I just ran. I made it a couple blocks before I realized I was running away from my apartment. There was no way I could make it back there. I ran a few more blocks and saw a small ranch style house. I tried the door and thank goodness it was unlock. I ducked inside and locked the door behind me. I thought I was safe. I turned around, to find myself face to face with a zombie. I shoved it away and started to run, but tripped over a toolbox that was laying on the floor. I looked back and saw a rubber mallet that must have been in it. I leapt for it and jumped to my feet. I did the only thing I could. I brought the mallet down on the zombie's head. After the third swing, its head cave in and it dropped to the floor. There were brains everywhere. I tried to hold it together, but I couldn't I just puked there on the spot. I stayed in one of the bedrooms the rest of the night. The next morning, I looked outside and saw a handful of zombies shuffling around. I did hear a dog barking, though. I looked out for a couple more minutes and I saw it. It looked alright. I grabbed some food and went to the door. He was a little hesitant, but eventually came. I had food after all. I could not find any bites on him and looked to be fine. He looked to have some doberman in him, but I'm not sure what else. He was pretty friendly, though. We stayed in the house all day, but the smell of the zombies was getting bad. The next day, we left and found another house free of zombies. This one is a two story and has a well stocked pantry. I think we might stay here for a little while. In the mean time, I have to think of what I'm going to name my new friend. He didn't have a collar on him and I have just been saying hear boy and stuff like that. He needs something better. Especially since he is only companion right now.

April 5, 2013: Day 12

Its been almost a week since saturday. At least I'm pretty sure its friday today. The days don't really have much meaning anymore with no job, errands, bills or TV. So far there is still power, though. Not much has happened lately. I have stayed cooped up inside and am almost out of food. I'm going to have to go out tomorrow and scavange. The nearest supermarket is only five blocks away. Then again, walking five blocks is a lot different nowadays. Its a lot more dangerous. I packed a bag with some snacks, flashlight, a book just in case and a couple knives as back up weapons. My main weapon is still the golf club, though. I have to find something better. Also, I keep hearing that dog barking. I last heard it a few hours ago. Maybe I come across it tomorrow. If I do, I really hope its friendly. I'm leaving at first light to maximize my daylight hours. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't run into too much trouble.

March 30, 2013: Day 7

Its been a week since the zombie outbreak. I have not left the apartment since my last excursion a few days ago. There has not even been any sounds from other survivors. There has to be someone out there somewhere. I did hear a dog barking a few hours ago, though. The poor thing. I hope its alright. I looked outside when I heard the barking, but only saw some zombies shuffling around. I wonder if dogs are affected by whatever is causing the zombies. Lets hope not. I am running low on food, though. I ate the last of my meat for lunch today. Amazingly, there is still power. I have no idea how that works, but I'm expecting it to go off any time now. So far I've kept pretty quiet inside and avoided the unwanted attention of the zombies outside. I have just been catching up on movies and TV shows on DVD, might as well while I can. All of the TV stations are off the air now. I did hear something about a camp or something at Fort McCoy just before one of the local channel went off the air. I don't know if its an evacuation site or what. Its one possibility of where to go if I ever have to leave town.

March 27, 2013: Day 4

I got up enough courage to venture out today and killed my first zombie. I don't know if "kill" is the right word, but thats what I'm going with. It was horrible! I know it sounds bad, but I hope it get easier. I'm going to have to do what I have to survive. I have to be stronger than them. Anyway, I packed a backpack with essentials and grabbed a putter as a weapon. It looked the most deadly to me just in case. I managed to bob and weave 4 blocks from my apartment until one reached through some bushes at me. I jumped a foot in the air and just started swinging. As soon as his head made it through the bushes, my putter connected, spraying his brains all over. I turned and ran as fast as I could back home. I can't stay locked in my apartment all the time. Eventually I'm going to run out of supplies and I'm going to have to venture out. I just hope I get desensitized to putting down zombies once and for all.

March 26, 2013

Do you remember where you were when life as we know it came to a screeching halt? Thats the question nowadays. I'm not talking about 9/11 or another terrist attack or a presidental election. I'm talking about when the dead came back to life. For me, I was on my way to get something to eat. I was a few miles from my apartment when I saw someone staggering down the sidewalk. I thought to my self, pretty early to get hammered. Then as I got a little closer, I could tell that his left arm was covered in blood. A woman jogging towards him stopped right by him. I'm guessing she was trying to see if he was alright. Its always the good sumaritan that winds up getting it first. The man lunged at her and knock her on the ground and started biting her. Blood was everywhere. Everything unfolded in a matter of seconds as I was driving by. I was staring and almost ran into the car in front of me. Then I saw another staggering man and then a woman. All of a sudden there were five and then ten. All bloody and attacking anyone near them. I immediately turned my car around and drove back home. I was so scared. I just wanted to get home and lock the door and turn on the TV. Thats when you find out really what kind of person you are, when in the middle of a crisis. Me? I was scared shitless and ran back home like a coward. I could have tried to save someone, but I didn't. I made it home and locked the door and tuned in to the local stations on the TV. They were all talking about the dead coming back to life and telling people to stay in their homes. Thats exactly what I did. I didn't have any family to worry about, so I just kept my door locked and tried to be quiet. That was 3 days ago. By the evening of the first day, the first television station went off the air. A few more in the middle of the night. Now there's nothing. Same with the radio. I have peeked out the curtains a couple times and see zombies wandering around. That's what I'm calling them because thats what they are. I'm keeping this diary in case I don't make it and someone cares about my story. Or on the other hand, if mankind does survive, then people will remember what we went through when the zombie apocolypse broke out. Either way, it helps to write. It passes the time. Pass the time until what I have no idea. There has to be some more people out there somewhere. Maybe I'll start by looking for other survivors.

Reboot

I have decided to wipe the slate clean and start again with "My Undead World." Its going to be the same principle, but just a fresh start. The nightmare is not over. Its just beginning...again!

Still Alive

Day 48: Well I couldn't end it all. I didn't have the courage. After all, who would watch out for Eeyore? Funny how a dog is the one to bring me back from the edge of suicide. I still don't know what to do now, though. I have not gone back outside since broke into this house. I have taken a couple peeks outside and there are only a handful of zombies outside. I searched the house and found enough canned goods to last a few days. I think I'll just stay in here til I need supplies. Then head towards Fort McCoy. Hopefully things there will be a little safer in this crazy and dangerous world.

Dead Island

The video game Dead Island comes out next week. It looks like it will be so much fun. I can't wait.

Dead

Day 47: Dead! They're all dead! I don't know what happened. I don't know if someone didn't shut a door tight or someone fell asleep. I just woke up to screaming. There were hundreds of zombies in the store. They got in somehow and caught us off guard. I fought as many as I could, but didn't do enough. I saw the bodies of the Halloway family. All of them torn limb from limb. Rick was no where in sight, so I fended the undead off and somehow escaped the store with one pistol and a backpack full of food. Eeyore managed to make it out too and followed me til I ran out of breath and broke into a house for the night. I can't believe it. Its just like the day this all started again. I didn't do a damn thing to help them. Maybe if I would have taken the night shift or took more precautions this would not have happened. I feel like such a failure. Is it really worth running anymore? Is God punishing me? Maybe I'll just give in and just shot myself in the head. I wouldn't want to come back as one of them. I don't know what to do...

The Walking Dead

In case you watched it on AMC and couldn't get enough, The Walking Dead comes to DVD and Blu-ray on March 8. I watched it and thought it was really good. I can't wait for the second season. I'll just have to pick up the first one and watch it over and over again until then.

Departure

Day 46: William went through with his plan today and headed for Fort McCoy along with most of his group. Four decided to say with Thomas and I. Rick was a loner that joined with William a week ago in Greenville. His parents passed away many years ago and he didn't have much family or friends. It took some convincing from William in order for Rick to join him. He spent most of his life alone and was what he was used to. The Halloway Family joined William 2 weeks ago in Kaukauna. They were under attack by the militia. I don't even know why I call them that. Its kind of a term I just applied to them in this journal. We all have different names for them. I don't think militia really fits though. Let's just call them bandits, since they take what the want and are only out for themselves. Anyway, to get back to the Halloway Family. William and his group helped fight off the bandits and the family joined with him. They never really thought going to Fort McCoy was such a good idea, but being with a bigger group was safer than being alone, they thought. Eric and Juliet are the parents of 10 year old Abby. The four of them thought staying here was much safer than taking their chances out there. I tried to get William to take some vehicles instead of making the trek on foot. He said no, though, because the sound would attract more of the undead. The departed in the early afternoon. I hope they made it to some place safe before the sun went down. I wish him luck on his journey and maybe we will run into each other again.

After William left, Thomas, Rick, Eric and I inspected the building to make sure it was safe and secure with no way for the undead to get in. Just before bed, we all discussed our safety here and agreed that we could always use more firepower. We managed to get 2 assault rifles and 5 extra clips from the bandits. Thats all we could find before the undead noticed us and made their way towards us. That leaves us with 2 assault rifes, 2 handguns, and a shotgun. We decided that Rick and I are going to travel up to Appleton in search of more. Its going to be dangerous, but worth the risk if it will make us safer against the zombies and anymore bandits out there. We are going to work out the details in the morning and head out just before noon.

Debate

Day 45: William and I talked most of the day today. He is planning to leave tomorrow and wants me to go with him. I declined his offer and told him it might be a better idea to stay here. I told him my doubts about Fort McCoy being a safe haven, not to mention the trek there. Here there is food and supplies and I know the city pretty well. We would be safe here for a long time. He disagreed and told me he is still planning on heading to Fort McCoy, but agreed to debate the two sides with everyone and let them decide on what each person wants to do.

We just got done discussing going to Fort McCoy versus staying here. By the sound of everyone's response, I think they all will pretty much go with William. I'm staying here, though. In my opinion, its a lot more safe, at least until winter comes. I'm not saying that the fort is not safe, but no one knows for sure. Nobody has been able to radio to them. All we hear is the same message. I may decide to travel there later if the city is no longer safe. Besides the fort, we started to talk about what caused all this. I heard everything from it being aliens, a government conspiracy to terrorists. No one could agree on whether its worldwide or not. We'll probably never know. One thing is for sure. Its pretty nice talking to a group of people again. We never appreciate things until they are gone.

Allies?

Day 44: I woke up this morning and went up to the roof of the building to have a look outside. It took me a little while to find out how to get up there, but once I did, I had an amazing site. I looked down and there was a circular mound of dead zombies surrounding the militia and there were still zombies crawling out of the woodwork. The militia had to be running out of ammo soon, though. All of sudden I saw a flash out in the distance. I couldn't tell what it was, but noticed something flying in my direction. Then I could hear the whoosh just as an explosion erupted where the mound used to be. Seconds later, a militia truck blew up. A few seconds later, another one blew up. There was a few who survived the explosion, but were badly injured. In a matter of minutes, they were zombie food. I looked back to the area where the rocket came from and saw a group of about 20 people marching towards the building. I could tell that most of them were armed. I ducked down while stilling trying to keep an eye on them. About 10 minutes later, they reached the front up to store. I must have not hid good enough because they called up to me and said they came in peace. They have ran into the militia back when their group was about 35 people. I got up and saw that they were made up of men, women, and children. I ran down to let them in, filling Thomas in on the way. Their leader's name was William and they were on their way to Fort McCoy, gathering up more survivors as they made their way there. They heard the radio message too. He was in Green Bay when the outbreak happened. After their run in with the militia, they decided to head to the fort and take their chances. I filled them in on my story and Thomas did the same. We decided to secure the store better and stay here for the night. Its nice to actually see a bigger group of survivors that are not shooting at me.

What Were We Thinking

Day 43: Thomas and I decided to go back to Wal-Mart today to get some more supplies. We took our ammo and bats with us and left just like we did yesterday. We went around to the back door that we left from yesterday. We spent a couple hours packing some bags when we heard gunshots. I have no idea how, but the militia found us again. They were gunning down the zombies in front of the automatic doors that didn't open anymore. I went in the back to secure all the doors back there while Thomas went to the front to keep an eye out. I got out into the main store when I heard gunshots. I knew they came from inside the store. Then I heard Thomas yelling "I dare you to try it again. Now theres only 12 of you bastards." I made it up front and another militia member was lying on the floor with a bullet in his head. We looted the body and got another handgun, an assault rifle, and some ammo. We could tell that they backed off a bit. We took advantage of the opportunity by looking for things we could use as a weapon. There was no guns or ammo, but plenty of flammable liquids. Gathered up as much as we could along with rags and bottles. After about an hour, we had several molotov cocktails. We finished just in time to see another guy run up to the door. Before he could let off a shot, Thomas lit and threw a bottle at him. The door erupted into flames, but I think he got away. All we had to do was hold them off. Its just a matter of time before a horde of zombies show up outside. I think they are already starting to arrive because I hear shots outside that are not directed towards us. Its starting to get dark and Thomas is yelling at me for writing instead of keeping an eye outside on them. I did not fight for my life during the first couple days for it to end at the hands of another survivor. I'll take them all out if I have to.

It Survived the Apocalypse

Day 42: We are out of food again. We have no other choice but to go out again. Thomas and I are not looking forward to it considering the last time we went grocery shopping, we almost didn't make it back. This time we are headed to Wal-Mart. Its only about a block away, so it shouldn't be too bad. We left in the late morning with whatever supplies we needed. We hoped we would make it back to our house. There were still large hordes of zombies everywhere, but made it to the store relatively easily. The automatic doors didn't work anymore, so we had to pry them open. We stepped inside and took a look around. After everything that happened, Wal-Mart looked the same. There were people everywhere. Well, actually they were zombies. Some of them were still wearing their blue vests and kinda wandering around. It didn't last long, though. One zombie noticed us and let out a moan. Soon every zombie in the store was headed towards us. We turned to look at each other and new what we had to do. We bashed in the skulls of the two closest zombies. We stood our ground for as long as we could and then retreated back out the door. We figured we would try to lure them all out and the run back inside and close the door. It actually worked pretty well and there were only a handful of zombies left inside. We spent a couple hours packing up as much food and supplies as we could. We found a back door that was free of zombies and high tailed it back to our house. We made it back safely with plenty of food and supplies. We might actually try it again tomorrow to get more to stock up.

Hell Breaking Loose

Day 40: One of our worst fears happened today. We woke up this morning to a loud explosion that shook the building and then we heard a voice. "Come out and surrender or else" it said. We realized that somehow the militia found us and apparently we did kill one of them. Thats what the voice of the leader said anyways. If we didn't surrender, they would "burn the building down and let the undead dead feast on our charred remains." Thomas and I discussed our opions. We both agreed that we had to get out of there. Before we could do anything, another explosion rocked the building. A few minutes later, there were the sounds of the undead at our door leading to the stairs. Time had run out. Thomas, scared to death, ran to the window and took a shot at one of the militia members. I pulled him away just before the window was shattered by a machine gun. Thomas said he killed another one, though. It was still 13 to 2. I didn't like our odds. We couldn't take them on. By the sound of it, they had the firepower to level the building without stepping foot in it. We ran to the other side of the building to see if there was any chance we could jump somewhere when more gunfire came flying in our direction. They had the building surrounded. We were totally screwed!

Not much later, we could still hear gunfire, but it wasn't directed at us anymore. I peaked out the window and couldn't believe what a saw. All the excitment attracted what looked like all the zombies in town. The militia was fighting for their lives and now was our chance. We quickly packed up all our supplies and fought through the crowd right outside our stairwell door and went down to the first floor. We made our way to the back door with Eeyore right behind us. We quietly opened the door and sprinted away. One of the militia spotted us and fired a couple rounds in our direction. The zombies were a bigger threat to his life, so he returned his attention on them. We ran as far as we could and made it to a house about a block away from a Wal-Mart. The house was clear of zombies and we were hidden. We were safe for the time being.

No Food

Day 39: Today, Thomas and I were all out of food. We had to make a run to the store, but there were still zombies everywhere and we didn't know if the militia was still out there. We had no other options, though. We pack as much ammo as we could and both grabbed a bat. I left a pile of food for Eeyore and we headed out. We made it to the store alright, leaving a trail of dead zombies behind us. The store was swarming with them as well. We took out a majority of them before we started gathering food. We were able to get a backpack filled when all of a sudden automatic gunfire erupted. The militia must still be here and tracked us here. We ran for cover as fast as we could, which there was very little of it. The entire front of the store is all glass windows, so those lasted about 2 seconds. I remembered about the rear exit and we started to make our way in that direction. At least now, there were hardly any zombies left in the store due to the gunfire. We made it out just as the militia was entering. Thomas and I took a couple shots at them and might of hit one. We didn't stick around to find out, though. We took off and headed towards the nearest block of buildings. We managed to lose them when we went through several of them. Eventually we made it back to our office building. We only got enough food to last a couple of days. We're going to have to out again soon and be more careful.
